Escape Room Rumours – 3 April 2017

Apologies for the silence over the last couple of months. Things got a bit busy but I’m starting to to catch up now. It turns out that during the time, the exit game industry didn’t stop, so this is a massive update – over 50 different items!

As ever, this site is on the look out for new games or venues that are opening, references in the media or anything else that might be of interest to the readers, so please do send an email if you spot anything of interest. That applies to owners too – feel free to send me your news for inclusion here. Don’t be shy!

On to the news

  • East Midlands
    • Escapologic opened their 7th game at the Nottingham site – Heistakes – which, according to their website, contains an actual bank vault!
    • Clue HQ Leicester opened two games The Vault and Teleporter
    • Room Escapes is aiming to open up physical and VR based escape rooms.
  • West Midlands
    • Immersive Events, based in Shrewsbury have been running ad hoc escape type events for a while but have just launched their first regularly scheduled escape games.
    • Escape Time opened in Sutton Coldfield with two games The Bank Heist and Sam’s Saloon Bar
    • … and their local paper came along to check them out.
    • Mapcar Exit Coventry opened The Mad Scientist
    • Escape Stoke opened Area 51
    • Old news but it looks like Birmingham University are getting in on the escape room act with a mini-escape room to kickstart their students’ year.
  • South East England
    • ctrl-alt-esc have launched their website for a new Margate game.
    • Escape 60 launched a website suggesting a new game is coming to Folkestone. They’re not planning on stopping there though with plans for expansion across the whole of Kent, including Ashford.
    • Canterbury may already have two venues but it’s getting another one with the historic Escape in the Towers opening last month with their Crime and Punishment Lab game.
    • Ashford is obviously a prime target for an escape room because the Pressure Point Escape Rooms website also launched indicating that they’ll be opening in the town before long.
    • Escape Game Brighton moved venues within the two, closing down Murder at Brighton Pier and Laboratory of a Madman and opening up sequels to each of those games. There was also suggestion that the new venue has room for a couple more games. Watch this space!
    • The Panic Room Gravesend 1 closed The Lab – Experiment 626 and opened Million Dollar Date Night and Old Father Time. Plenty of expansion going on in their brand so keep your eyes peeled for even more games in the future.
    • Escape Hub opened in Maidstone with Agents Undetected and, last week, The Laughing Lair joining the fold.
    • Breaking the Law is opening this week at Exciting Escapes in Southampton.
    • The Escape Game have announced their intention to open in Reading.
  • Scotland
    • Tick Tock Escape Games opened their doors in Aberdeen with three games – Zombie, Ghost and Gangster
    • The Locked Door also opened in Aberdeen with the game The Heist
    • Escape Rooms Scotland opened their fourth venue in Stirling with two brand new games Velocity and Castle Alba
    • Abertay University’s Digital Graduate Show has mention of an escape room as part of their celebrations.
  • South West England
    • Co-decode is a new venue opening in Swindon. Date to be confirmed but they’re aiming to open in May or June.
    • And in the same town the Clue HQ franchise are opening another location with Bunker 38 and Cluetankhamun in their initial offering – currently planned for April.
    • Eden Escape closed Alien Rescue after a short run.
    • Mission Escape in Exeter closed Sensory Objective and replaced it with a jungle themed Maioc Crisis
    • Escape Rooms Plymouth opened Rescue Cid and HMP Clink
  • North East England
    • The Strategy opened up in Sunderland in early February with a single game, the Vault, and further games in the pipeline.
    • Never Give Up opened King Tut’s Tomb in Newcastle – a particularly interesting game because it appears to be part escape room, part Crystal Maze experience.
    • Cluedini, a kickstarter-backed escape room, opened their first game, Blitz.
  • Other
    • Holiday Lettings put out a top 15 UK escape games list. While most enthusiasts will disagree with some entries on that list, it’s notable in that they’ve included at least one relatively obscure venue that is much-loved by enthusiasts.
    • Breakout Education is a company that specialises in educational escape rooms with a specific focus on Maths.
    • One of the students at Leeds Trinity University, with help from Liz Cable, did some investigation on accessibility in connection with escape rooms.
    • Escapement launched their website and look to be opening in Margate.
  • London
    • Handmade Mysteries are opening a venue in Islington for their new game Poppa Plock
    • Breakout Rooms have a very placeholderish website but the address seems to suggest a game will be opening in Watford.
    • Inside Out Escape opened CSI London, their second game
    • Modern Fables opened up in South Bermondsey with their self-made game, The Escapist
    • Adventox opened up with two copies of two rooms. Alcatraz: No Way Out is a prison break game while Mission X sees you up against terrorists to defend the Capital.
    • Escapemobile closed Houdini’s Last Trick at the end of the Vault Festival – expect this game to be going on tour around the country.
  • Yorkshire and the Humber
    • Facility 43 is a zombie experience with escape game overtones – time will tell whether it’s enough escape room to be added to this site’s directory.
    • Liberty Escapes are running an ambitious crowdfunding campaign for a new venue in Harrogate.
    • Tick Tock Unlock are opening up a VR escape experience as well as releasing two new games.
    • Escape Hull opened three new games: EMCU Trials, Escape Casino and a locally-inspired game, The Darker Side of Hull
    • Look Key Escape opened Escape from Wonderland
    • ParaPark, the original European escape room, opened last month with 9th Gateway – one of their original games in Budapest.
    • Escape Reality Leeds opened in Leeds with Jungala, Alcatraz, Nosferatu, The Iron Kingdom, Down the Rabbit Hole, Machina, Apocalypse
  • North West England
  • Wales
    • Tenby’s Great Escape‘s website launched with a plan to open in the Summer.
    • The Escape Game have announced their intention to open in Camarthen
    • There are very vague early plans for an escape room in Caernarfon as part of a Porth Mawr redevelopment. Yes, that’s a link to a google search to a document that has a passing reference to it… I said it was vague and early.
